Synopsis

Pieter de Wilde geeft in zijn oratie zijn kijk op de Europese politiek en maatschappij, gebaseerd op politieke sociologie. In Brussel klinkt de roep om veiligheid voor Europa sterk. We moeten zelfstandig worden op het gebied van defensie, voedselvoorziening, energie, hoogstaande technologie, en vele andere terreinen. Rusland en China zijn een bedreiging en Amerika biedt geen bescherming meer. Centrum-rechtse politici als Ursula von der Leyen en Emmanuel Macron argumenteren voor een "Europa dat beschermt" (l'Europe qui protège, A Europe that protects). Navo Secretaris-Generaal Rutte gooit daar nog een schepje bovenop en stelt dat we ons moeten voorbereiden op oorlog. 

Wat betekent deze retoriek voor de politiek in Europa? Wat voor impact heeft het op bestaande machtsverhoudingen en de toekomst van Europese integratie? Om dat soort vragen te kunnen beantwoorden, ontvouwt Pieter de Wilde in zijn oratie zijn kijk op Europese politiek en maatschappij, gebaseerd op politieke sociologie.

Author Biography

Pieter De Wilde, University of Groningen

Pieter de Wilde is Chair in European Politics and Society at the University of Groningen. Before coming to 
Groningen in 2024, he worked as Professor in Political Science (2019-2023) and Associate Professor in  European Studies (2016-2019) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in  Trondheim. He was a Senior Researcher (2011-2016) at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin (WZB) in  Germany, studying the emergence of a political cleavage between cosmopolitans and communications.  Pieter holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oslo, where he worked at ARENA, Center for  European Studies (2006-2011). His research addresses the interaction between societal conflict and  transnationalization in Europe, focusing on politicization, representation and cleavage formation. 
He has published in the Journal of European Public Policy, European Journal of Political Research, Political  Studies, Journal of Common Market Studies, Acta Politica and Cambridge University Press among others.
